The Homeless Shelter of the Future
The homeless shelter of the future must be reworked from the sprawling grid of cots completely devoid of privacy to the cubicle with bed, closet, desk, and storage. The bunk duplex concept shown below is fabricated of 3/4 plywood with connections made with the Lamello Cabineo 8 M6. This fastener uses threaded metal inserts making it easy to
repeatedly set up or take down each duplex unit. Each duplex has a footprint of 8' by 13' by 9' high and consists of around 840 sq ft of 3/4 plywood - or around 12 sheets of plywood per resident. At $40 per sheet that is around $500 with perhaps another $400 for fasteners and CNC fabrication. Figuring in another $300 for mattress and furnishings and for around $1,200 the homeless client has a rudimentary furnished room.
The Lamello Cabineo fasteners allows all of the CNC fabrication to be done on a single, simple, 3 Axis machine. All of the pieces for a duplex can be flatpacked into a stack around 20 inches high, 4 feet wide, and 8 feet long.
