Lockdowel Fastener Furniture

VRT is very excited about the emerging trend toward the use of large format ceramic tile - and were talking the big stuff aka 24 x 48 x ~ half inch - for counter-tops and back-splashes. We love a company called RAK which offers amazing large ceramic tile for floors, countertops, and walls. To get an idea of how its installed take a look at this video. Also for those interested here is a video titledtrowel and error explaining the proper way to install large format tile. Note that on the countertop the ceramic tile edge is flush with the drawer fronts. In keeping with present design philosophy its thickness is left at its true dimension of around half inch rather than trying to make it appear thicker by attaching a piece of material turned on edge.

In this blog we present empty RTA cabinety designed to be assembled entirely with Lockdowel E-Clips, H-Clips, and spring pins. For simplicity drawer pulls and door handles are machined in - but this is easily converted to hardware pulls and handles. All of the pieces can be cut from 3/4 sheet stock and then surface routed and edge bored (to fit Lockdowel fasteners ) in vertical machining centers such as produced by Biesse, SCM, and a new entry from the Felder Group, the 950 Creator.

We have designed everything for assembly with Lockdowel fasteners - beds, sofas ( which slide out from the wall and double as bed), Ottomans, tables, desks, cabinets, chests of drawers ( using the amazing Lockdowel drawer slide system ). You can view them here. Keep in mind the builtins are depicted in spaces of very generous proportions and stretched out for illustrative purposes. In real world apartments into which such cabinetry must be retrofitted space will likely be neither as open or as linear.

Here are drawings from a previous post demoing how Lockdowel fasteners work well in designing builtin storage cabinetry Ledger 2 x 4's are first bolted to the wall studs to which the back panels of the cabinetry are attached. The drawings show how the storage wall cabinetry can then be assembled in place on the wall absorbing any convex or convex wall curvature as it is assembled. Here are drawings showing a more finished design for a one bedroom apartment with fitted aka builtin furniture.
