Moving from one apartment to another is a daunting task. For longer distance moves it can be cheaper and usually much simpler for tenants to simply dispose of the cheap furniture typically purchased and start from scratch in their new digs. Flat pack furniture doesn't travel well. Clunky bedframes and overstuffed chairs and sofas are a real nuisance to move so much so that in large complexes you find them piled high in and around the dumpsters.

Landlords are responsible for storing the property of tenants who abandon the property. With all builtins that means proportionally less stuff to haul away and store - as well as proportionally smaller stuff which can probably just be boxed up, easily moved, and easily stored. As well all builtins mean just that much less stuff to clutter up the dumpsters and pay disposal costs on.
